Ending in 2023, the High Street Heritage Action Zones was an exciting nationwide project funded by Historic England, working with local partners – The Box, Plymouth Octopus and Plymouth Heritage Praxis – to breathe life back into areas that are rich in uncelebrated heritage.

Royal Parade and the Civic Square benefited from four years engagement with the communities on Plymouth in protecting and restoring these incredible landmarks. The project approach was essentially two-pronged. Different communities were targeted and engaged in walks, talks and conversations. This project tied into the overarching Future Highstreets Project which involved significant impact to public realm.
Public engagement took part throughout the four years. In the initial phase, University of Plymouth students – as residents in the city centre - were a target group. Throughout the four years and the project also provided a grant scheme for groups to apply for funding.
Communities were encourged to develop their own ideas around their relationship to the heritage action zone.
